November is designated as Adopt a Senior Pet Month to raise awareness and encourage the adoption of older dogs and cats from shelters. This month-long initiative, founded by organizations like the ASPCA and Petfinder, highlights the benefits of adopting senior pets, such as their calm demeanor, training, and ability to fit into a variety of households.
Why adopt a senior pet?
- They are often already trained: Many senior pets are already house-trained and know basic commands like “sit” and “stay,” saving new owners time and effort.
- They are usually calmer: Senior pets are typically less energetic and demanding than puppies or kittens, making them a great fit for households with children or those who prefer a more relaxed companion.
- You know what you’re getting: A senior pet’s personality, size, and grooming needs are already established, making it easier to find a pet that is a good match for your lifestyle.
- You save a life: Senior pets are often overlooked in shelters, and adopting one can save a life and provide a loving home to an animal that might otherwise be euthanized due to overcrowding.
How to participate
- Visit a local shelter: Consider visiting your local animal shelter or rescue organization to meet senior pets in your area.
- Support senior pets online: Share posts and stories of senior pets available for adoption to help them find homes.
- Donate to senior pet programs: Many organizations have special funds to help with medical needs or daily care for senior animals.
At House with a Heart, we have a fund to help our Senior and Special Needs animals:
