Covenant Life Village senior apartments
On a sunny Wednesday morning, I load up my car at House with a Heart with kibble, canned food, treats, and kitty litter so I can deliver them to the residents of the Covenant Life Village apartments, an affordable senior community in Germantown, Maryland.
Who are the residents? They’re Cody, Mickey, Miss Kitty, Rascal, Daisy, Briar, Hunter, and Tori – and their owners!
Each month, House with a Heart provides free cat and dog food to this community of pet-loving seniors. In this time of COVID and economic insecurity, a little extra help with pet food goes a long way.
On that sunny Wednesday when I reach Covenant Life Village, I unload the pet food into a red wagon, take my clipboard out, and get ready to make my rounds. Sometimes my senior Shih-Tzu Elvis rides along, tucked into a corner of the wagon.
I check in with the apartment manager, get my temperature taken, make sure my mask is secure, and then I spend about 2 hours making door-to-door deliveries to 8 apartments.
Why does it take 2 hours? Because the owners and I chat, Elvis visits with the dogs, the cats run and hide – it’s really a delightful time! And, over and over again, I’m told how much the extra help is appreciated and what a difference it makes in their budgets.
Making sure that no dog or cat goes hungry with Pet Pantry is just one of the ways House with a Heart impacts the lives of pets and their owners.
