Mikey was a handsome Bichon who was picked up by the Montgomery County Humane Society in 2011 after he was abandoned outside a pet store. Little Mikey was in very poor condition so we brought him to House with a Heart and immediately got him the medical care he needed to transform him into a happy healthy lovable pup.
After he was up and running, he went to live with Judy and Greg, two of our most devoted volunteers, as a Forever Foster. Judy and Greg gave Mikey a wonderful family life.
With them he got to ride in his car seat to pick up Greg at the Metro. He went for daily walks with Judy before and after work where he became beloved in the neighborhood. Mikey was blessed to have many friends and family while living with his new Mom and Dad, and he was a pampered grandpup to Judy’s Mom, who also spent lots of time with him.
Mikey was even a major neighborhood good citizen. On two different occasions he insisted on changing the direction of a regular walk with Judy – they found someone’s wallet and were able to return it. Another time Mikey took them past a neighbor’s car with the windows down right before a major storm — so Mikey helped to save the day again.
Over the past year Mikey has been declining in health. He has struggled with issues with his eyes, kidney failure, loss of mobility and finally dementia. Judy and Greg worked with their vet to try anything and everything to help Mikey have quality of life. It broke their hearts that Mikey was losing his battle. They wanted him to have peace and no more pain. Here is the message from Judy letting us know about their decision.
Judy and Greg told us:
It is with pain and tears that we are letting you know about Mikey. We made the decision that it is only fair to Mikey that we let him go.
I know you know how incredibly difficult this is for us. For a long, long time, it is going to be so tough for us and he will forever be in our hearts. But we do know now that we are making the right decision — we just had to know that we tried everything for our forever, special Mikey. Mikey is such a gift, such a gentle soul who joined our family thanks to HWAH on March 12, 2011 – a little more than 5 ½ years ago.
He made us smile every day and made everyone who knew him smile. We met new people because of him because everyone wanted to say hello. So many people in our neighborhood know and love Mikey!
We are incredibly sad that Mikey has crossed the Rainbow Bridge – yet we are so grateful that this little guy had such a wonderful family to love and care for him these past 5 ½ years.
