Question From Ellen: “My Pip is a 10 yr old doxie chihuahua mix. He is already taking Apoquel daily and Cytopoint shots every 4-5 weeks. Unfortunately, recently he has started licking his paws even with his medicine. Any ideas that I should be checking out to help him to stop his licking.” Ellen Biesecker
Thank you for the question!
We have definitely had our fair share of pups that incessantly lick their paws! Like you, we’ve had success with Apoquel and Cytopoint, but we’ve also found ourselves in similar situations where those options no longer seem to work. So, what next? Here are a few things (and links!) of what we’ve learned and used along the way that might help Pip:
🔹 Check for Yeast Infections – Yeast infections can often mask as allergies, but they require different treatment. If Pip’s paws have a strong odor, redness, or a greasy texture, a vet might prescribe an anti-fungal medication instead.
🔹 Consider Allergy Testing – Even with medication, allergens in the environment or diet can still trigger licking. An allergy specialist can run tests to pinpoint specific triggers. If you suspect grass allergies, wiping Pip’s paws with a baby wipe after every walk can help reduce exposure.
🔹 Look into Behavioral Causes – If medical issues have been ruled out, Pip’s licking may be due to anxiety, OCD, or boredom. Some dogs find comfort in licking their paws as a self-soothing behavior. In cases like this, anti-anxiety medications such as fluoxetine or trazodone have helped reduce compulsive licking. You might also try distraction techniques, puzzle toys, or calming supplements to keep him engaged and relaxed.
🔹 Bath Time Relief – Weekly baths with medicated or oatmeal shampoo can help soothe itchy feet. We’ve also used paw soaks, which contain a combination of ingredients to calm irritation and itching.
🔹 Paw Balm & Protective Measures – If irritation is the issue, vet-approved paw balms or booties might offer relief.
Since Pip is already on allergy meds, it may be worth discussing these possibilities with your vet. We hope he finds some relief soon – sending lots of love to your sweet boy!
