HWAH is a non-profit, all-volunteer organization. We care for senior dogs and cats and provide a safe and loving place for them.
Our residents lose their home for a variety of reasons. Some owners are not willing or able to provide the extra care and attention a senior dog needs. Senior dogs are usually euthanized, since they rarely are adopted. In 2006, the sanctuary was created for dogs that were at risk of losing their home or being euthanized because of their age.
HWAH is a sanctuary for these dogs and, unlike other rescue organizations, we do not seek adoption for our residents. We provide a safe place for our residents to live out their lives, so they will never lose their home again.
HWAH is located in Gaithersburg, Maryland, in a house on two acres of fenced property. HWAH is a bright and comfortable home environment. Doggie doors lead to secure outdoor play yards and are accessible from many rooms in the house.
Each animal arrives with a unique set of circumstances. Food and medical expenses are generally greater with senior dogs because many require special diets and more frequent medical attention. We have a full sanctuary with about 30 senior dogs and 4 senior cats.
HWAH relies on donations and dog-boarding fees to cover its expenses. In addition, HWAH’s all-volunteer staff is instrumental in daily operations and upkeep of the sanctuary.
